# Add Contacts to Group

This job was previously called: Add Member. This job adds contacts to a group. The contacts become members of the group.

- The contacts are selected from the system-wide database with a mandatory selection. The contacts must therefore already exist in the system.
- Contacts who are already a member of the target group, who are on the group blacklist or who have the status pending in the group are skipped. The system does not report an error in these cases.
- As a contact can be a member of multiple groups, all existing group memberships are retained.

## Use Case

This job moves existing contacts into an existing group. This can have a large number of practical applications. This job does not import new contacts into the system. To import new contacts, use the [Import Contacts](/v1/docs/time-based-automations-import-contacts) job.

## Basic Settings

| **Name** | This input field defines the name of the automation. The name is used to identify the automation in the system. It appears on the Time-based Automations Overview window. The maximum length is 100 characters. |
| --- | --- |
| **Description** | This input field defines a description of the automation. The description makes it easier to identify the automation in the system. |
| **Job** | This input field defines the job. For a list of all available jobs, see [All Available Time-Based Jobs](/v1/docs/all-available-time-based-jobs). |

## Define Job

This area defines the specific parameters of the job.

- **Group Name**: This field defines the group to which contacts are added. Use the ![](https://cdn.document360.io/554b9b98-6720-4d8b-9919-c7b203d72648/Images/Documentation/99df0647-cd95-43e8-85e7-4e6e15a1541d.png) symbol to search for a specific group.
- **Add Contact:** Defines whether the addresses in the file are added or invited. When you add contacts, you can decide whether to send them an additional confirmation email.
  - **With Notification:**The imported contacts are sent a confirmation or welcome message immediately after import. The default system message for this purpose is SysMsgWelcomeToGroup.
  - **Without Notification:**The imported contacts are not sent any confirmation or welcome message.
  - **Invited:**The imported contacts are sent an invitation immediately after import. Contacts must accept the invitation by clicking on a link in the email. The default system message for this purpose is SysMsgInviteToGroup. Recipients who do not reply within 14 days are automatically deleted from the group. Recipients who have not yet accepted membership to the group are given Pending status. Pending recipients do not receive messages in the group. This conforms to Double Opt-in standards.

## Define Selection

**Selection**: This drop-down list defines a selection. A selection filters contacts according to defined conditions. Use the ![](https://cdn.document360.io/554b9b98-6720-4d8b-9919-c7b203d72648/Images/Documentation/99df0647-cd95-43e8-85e7-4e6e15a1541d.png) symbol to search all selections in the system. A selection is mandatory for this job. Only the selected contacts are added to the group. The selection runs system-wide. This means that all users in the system who fulfil the selection criteria are added to the group.

## Schedule

| **Schedule** | This button saves your changes and opens the Schedule Time-based Automation window. Here you define the date and time of execution. For more information, see [Schedule Time-Based Automation (window)](/v1/docs/schedule-time-based-automation-window). |
