# Add a Coupon to a Message

## Goal

Insert a personal coupon code into an email or SMS message.

## Prerequisites

- A coupon list with enough codes for all recipients exists. See [Create and Manage Coupon Lists](/v1/docs/managing-coupon-lists).
- You have one of the permissions 157, 158, or 159. With permission 157, you only see your own coupon lists.

## Procedure

1. Create or edit an email or SMS message.
2. Click **Mapp Engage Variables**.
3. From the **Category** drop-down list, select **Coupon**. ⇒ The coupon lists are shown. The number in brackets is the number of remaining codes.
4. Drag and drop the coupon list into the message. ⇒ Mapp Engage inserts the coupon variable, for example `<%coupon.welcomecoupon%>`.
5. Preview the message. The preview shows the preview text of the coupon list instead of a real code. By default, this is the list name followed by `_previewCoupon`.
6. Send the message or save it as a prepared message. ⇒ During sendout, each recipient receives a different code.

> Note
> 
> If you insert the same coupon list more than once, the message shows the same code in each place. To include several different codes, insert a variable from a separate coupon list for each code.

## Additional Information
