# Add a Coupon to a Message

## Goal

Insert a coupon into a message using Engage Variables.

## Prerequisites

- A coupon list must be available and contain active codes.
- The user must have permission to view the list (Permission 160 or higher).

---

## Procedure

1. Create a new message or edit an existing one in the *Compose Message* screen.

(Works for email and SMS messages.)
2. Click the **Engage Variables** button. ![Insert Personalization](https://cdn.document360.io/554b9b98-6720-4d8b-9919-c7b203d72648/Images/Documentation/Variable.png)
3. In the **Engage Variables** panel, open the *Category* drop-down and select **Coupon**.

The available coupon lists are displayed, along with the number of remaining codes.
4. Click and drag the desired coupon variable into the message editor.

A placeholder is inserted where the coupon will appear.
5. Preview the message to verify the correct placement of the coupon placeholder.

During previews, a default test coupon (e.g., `<CouponListName>_previewCoupon`) is displayed.

The real coupon code is only inserted during sendout.
6. Send the message or save it as a prepared message.

One unique coupon code is inserted per recipient.

If the same list is inserted more than once in the same message, the same code is reused.

> [!NOTE]
> Note
>
> When a coupon message is forwarded within Mapp Engage, a new coupon code is assigned to the forwarded message.
>
> To disable this, see Forward a Coupon Message.
