# Create a Barcode

## Goal

Create a new barcode using the Barcode Generator in Mapp Engage.

## Prerequisites

- You must have permission to create barcodes (Permission 170 or 172).
- A coupon list or custom attribute must be available if required for your barcode type.

---

## Procedure

1. In the main navigation, go to *Content > Voucher Manager > Barcodes*.
2. Click **Create**.
3. In the *Basic Settings* section:
  - Enter a **Name** for the barcode. (The name must be unique.)
  - Optionally, add a **Description** to help identify the barcode.
  - Select a **Barcode Type** from the drop-down list. (See [*S*upported Barcode Types](/v1/docs/supported-barcode-types) for details.)
  - If multiple domains are available, select the appropriate **Domain**.
4. In the *Content* section, select a **Data Source**:
  - **Single Input**: Manually enter static data for a single barcode. This option does not support personalization or tracking.
  - **Coupon List**: Use codes from an imported coupon list. A unique barcode is assigned to each recipient during sendout.
  - **Attribute**: Generate personalized barcodes based on a custom attribute (e.g., membership ID). The attribute value is used as the barcode content.
5. Configure optional display and layout settings if needed.

For details, see the [Create New Barcode](https://docs.mapp.com/docs/create-new-barcode-window).
6. Save the barcode:
  - Click **Save** to store the barcode in the *Barcodes Overview*.
  - **Save as Content Element** is only available when using **Single Input** as the data source. This stores the barcode in the *Content Store*, where it can be manually inserted into messages.

> [!NOTE]
> Notes
>
> - Barcodes created with Single Input are static and can be reused.
> - Barcodes based on Coupon Lists or Attributes are personalized during sendout and can be tracked.
> - Layout options and available settings may vary depending on the selected barcode type.

---

## Next Step

Once your barcode is created, you can insert it into a message using Engage Variables. [Learn how to add a barcode to a message](https://docs.mapp.com/docs/add-a-barcode-to-a-message)
