# Creating a Segment

## Goal

Create a new segment in Segmentation Builder that can be saved and published for use across Mapp Engage.

## Background Information

A segment consists of **criteria** and optionally **containers**.

- Criteria define individual conditions for selecting contacts.
- Containers group multiple criteria or nested logic blocks under a shared operator, allowing you to build more complex audience definitions.

## Procedure

1. Open *Audience > Segmentation > Segmentation Builder*.
2. Click **Create**.
3. Enter a unique name for the new segment.
  - Optionally, enter a description to store additional information.
4. Click **Create**.
5. From the **Add New Criteria** panel, drag the required **criteria** or **containers** onto the canvas.
6. Configure the logic as needed.
  - Add, remove, or rearrange elements directly on the canvas.
  - Use containers when you want to group conditions under a shared operator or structure more complex logic.
7. To update counts for the entire segment, click the calculation symbol at the top of the canvas.
8. Click **Save** to store the segment as a draft you can continue editing.

> The segment is saved and you can keep refining the criteria as needed, but it will not be available for use in the Engage system.
9. Click **Publish** to make the segment available for use in Mapp Engage.

> Engage validates the segment structure before publishing. A segment is only published if:
> 
> - all criteria and containers are combined logically
> - all dates and settings are valid
> - all mandatory fields are completed
