# Define a Raw Data Export

### Goal

Configure a reusable export that delivers event-level data for advanced analysis in external systems such as BI tools or data warehouses.

For a detailed description of each wizard step, see the [Exports Online Help](/v1/docs/exports).

---

### When to Use Raw Data Exports

Use raw exports when you need:

- Event-level tracking
- Custom attribution models
- Maximum analytical flexibility
- Data warehouse ingestion

If aggregated metrics are sufficient, use [Simplified Data Exports](/v1/docs/simplified-data-export) instead.

---

### Before You Start

- Ensure the Raw Data Exports feature is enabled.
- Configure a reachable server destination for the export file.

---

### Permissions and Sensitive Data

Raw data exports may include personally identifiable information (PII), such as names or email addresses. Access to this data is controlled through system permissions.

- **Permission 163** — Allows users to create and edit export configurations.
- **Permission 255** — Allows users to export sensitive user data, including PII.

Grant permission 255 only when exporting sensitive data complies with your organization’s data governance policies. Restrict this permission to authorized roles to prevent unintended data exposure.

---

### Key Decisions Before Configuring

- **Include a stable identifier**

Always export at least one unique contact identifier (for example, User ID or Email) to support downstream analysis.
- **Choose the correct event scope**

Export only the events required for reporting to control file size and processing time.
- **Understand attribute timing**

Attribute values reflect the state at the time of export, not necessarily at sendout.
- **Validate with a small time frame**

Test new configurations before running large exports.

---

### Procedure

1. Go to *Data Management > Exports*.
2. Click **Create** and select **Raw Data Export**.
3. Complete the wizard and save the configuration.

The export is now available for manual or scheduled generation.

---

### What Happens Next

- Generate the export on demand, or
- Schedule automated delivery.

See:

- [Generate Exports Manually](/v1/docs/generate-exports-manually)
- [Generate Export (Whiteboard)](/v1/docs/generate-export)
- [Generate Export (Automation)](/v1/docs/job-generate-export)
