# Message Categories

Message categories can be assigned to individual messages in Mapp Engage to make organizing and identifying messages easier.

## Creating Message Categories​

New message categories are created in the [Message Category Overview (window)](/v1/docs/message-category-overview-window). For instructions, see [Create New Message Category](/v1/docs/create-new-message-category).

## Assigning Message Categories​

The category is assigned to a message before the message sendout in the [​Configuration for Sendout](/v1/docs/configuration-for-sendout) in the Advanced Options area.

Only one category can be assigned to a message at any time.

After a message has been sent, it is no longer possible to change the category of the message.

## Filtering by Message Category ​

You can now filter by message category in **Message Statistics**. For more information, see [Message Category Filter](/v1/docs/mapp-engage-message-category-filter).
