Timed Link Redirection

Prev Next

Overview

Timed link redirection ensures that links in messages direct recipients to up-to-date and available content. After a specified period, all links in a message automatically redirect to a new destination, such as the start page of an online shop. This helps prevent recipients from landing on expired offers, out-of-stock products, or pages that no longer exist.

Key Characteristics

  • Group-wide configuration: Timed link redirection is enabled at the group level and applies to all messages within that group.

  • Uniform timing and destination: All links in the group redirect after the same defined time period and point to the same new destination.

  • Automatic protection against outdated content: Recipients clicking links long after sendout are guided to a relevant fallback page instead of obsolete content.

  • System link exclusion: System links, such as unsubscribe or forward links, are never redirected.

Configuration and Behavior

General Behavior

Once timed link redirection is enabled for a group, it applies automatically to all links in all messages sent from that group. No per-message configuration is required.

Excluding Individual Links

Single links can be excluded from automatic redirection by editing the HTML code of the message. Add the parameter ecm:ttl="off" to the link tag.

Example:
<a href="http://MainWebshopPage.de/customercomplaint" ecm:ttl="off">Customer Service</a>

CMS Template Considerations

When using CMS templates, links cannot be included or excluded from timed link redirection through the template user interface. To define which links should be redirected and which should remain unchanged, contact your customer service representative.

Examples

A fashion retailer sends weekly newsletters with product promotions that change frequently. The retailer configures timed link redirection so that after 30 days, all product links redirect to the online shop’s main page. As a result, recipients who click on older messages are not taken to discontinued or out-of-stock products.

A company promotes a limited-time offer valid for one week. Link redirection is set so that seven days after sendout, all links redirect to the home page. This ensures that late clicks do not lead to expired offers.
