# Why is the sum of new visitors and returning visitors not the number of visitors?

In general, the new or returning visitor information is visit based information.

If a visitor has made his first visit and further visits within an analysis period, he is therefore shown once as a new visitor and in all subsequent visits as a returning visitor.
