    Article summary

In Mapp Engage, email messages are always created based on templates. You cannot create an email message without selecting a template first. Templates define the layout, structure, and branding of your messages while still allowing flexibility to customize the content for each sendout.

This page helps you understand how to work efficiently with templates — without needing any HTML knowledge.

    1. Where to Start

To create a new email message:

    1. Go to Content > Email > Email Messages

    2. Click Create New and select a template from the list

You’ll now see the message editor, where you can customize the content of each block.

    2. What You Can Edit

Templates are made up of blocks. Some areas are editable, while others are locked by your developers to protect layout or branding elements.

In editable blocks, you can usually modify:

    • Text – Change headlines, paragraphs, CTAs, etc.

    • Images – Replace visuals or logos

    • Links – Update URLs or tracking parameters

    • Personalization – Insert contact data (e.g., first name)

💡 Tip: If something can’t be edited, it’s probably locked in the template or block for consistency.

    3. Using Variables

Many templates include variables that simplify editing. These appear either inline in the block or in the right-hand panel of the editor.

    Common use cases:

    • Select a background color from a drop-down

    • Enter a product name or CTA in a text field

    • Add or remove a logo with a toggle

✏️ You can’t break anything — all changes are specific to your message and won’t affect the template.

    4. Personalization and Dynamic Content

You can personalize your email messages using standard Mapp Engage features such as:

Profile attributes (e.g., first name, city, or gender)

Dynamic blocks that show different content based on segments or contact data

Variables in the right-hand panel that allow input without editing the layout

These elements are often predefined in the template or block and can be easily filled out during message creation. For detailed reference, see the Personalization.

    5. Sending Your Message

Once your message is ready, click Prepare Sendout.

    You now have two options:

    1. Send to Group (One-Time Sendout)

    • Use for one-time campaigns

    • Choose a group and send immediately or schedule later

    • Sent or scheduled messages appear in Messages > Outbox > Email

    2. Save as Prepared Message (Automation)

    • Use when the message is part of a Whiteboard or automation

    • Saves the message as reusable content

    • Find it under Messages > Prepared Messages > Email

    6. Best Practices

    • ✅ Always start from an approved template

    • ✅ Only change what’s editable – don’t try to replicate the layout

    • ✅ Reuse the same template for similar campaigns

    • 🚫 Don’t make layout or style changes in the message editor

    • 🚫 Avoid copy-pasting HTML into blocks unless instructed
