You create barcodes with the Barcode Generator from a coupon list, a custom attribute, or manually entered data. Barcodes from a coupon list or a custom attribute are generated individually for each recipient during sendout. > [!NOTE] > Note > > Barcodes are not supported in SMS messages. Barcodes stored in the Content Store are not available in this category. To use them, see [Use a Content Store Element in an Email](/v1/docs/use-a-content-element-in-an-email). --- ## Navigation Path 1. Create or edit an email message. 2. Click **Mapp Engage Variables**. 3. From the **Category** drop-down list, select **Barcode**. 4. Drag and drop the barcode into the message. --- ## Available Barcodes The **Barcode** category lists all barcodes in your Mapp Engage system by name and ID. If the category shows no barcodes, one of the following applies: - There are no barcodes in your Mapp Engage system. - You do not have permission to see barcodes. You need one of the following system permissions: - 170 **Barcodes: View and Edit Own Barcodes** (you only see your own barcodes) - 171 **Barcodes: View All Barcodes** - 172 **Barcodes: View and Edit All Barcodes** - Your barcodes are stored in the Content Store. --- ## Format The variable is inserted as an image tag. For example, the following variable inserts the barcode with the ID 104: ```plaintext ``` You do not need to change the variable. During sendout, Mapp Engage replaces it with the barcode. --- ## Related Topics - [Add a Barcode to a Message](/v1/docs/add-a-barcode-to-a-message) - [Create a Barcode](/v1/docs/create-a-new-barcode) - [Barcode Types](/v1/docs/supported-barcode-types)
