Overview

The Settings tab defines default system-wide configuration for message creation and system user passwords. The values configured here apply to the entire Mapp Engage system and are used as defaults for all system users.

These settings control how messages are created (encoding, image handling, and editor selection) and how system passwords are generated, validated, and renewed.

Character Encoding

Setting

Description

Character Encoding

Defines the default character encoding for the system. This encoding is preselected when creating or editing:

  • an email message

  • a CMS paragraph

  • a Mapp Engage landing page

Behavior and Scope

  • The default character encoding applies only to message creation and landing page creation.

  • Import and export files are not affected; the correct character encoding must be selected manually during those processes.

  • For background information, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_encoding.

Image Handling

Setting

Description

Image Handling

Defines the default method for handling images in email messages. The selected option is preselected whenever a new email message is created. This setting does not apply to CMS messages, which always use images hosted in Mapp Engage.

Options:

  • Image Links are Unchanged: Image URLs remain unchanged. Images are downloaded from the defined URL when the email is opened. This option is recommended when image links include additional information, such as tracking pixel parameters.

  • Images are Inlined (Offline HTML): Images are inserted as inline attachments. This increases the message size but allows images to be displayed offline. During sending, Mapp Engage retrieves the images and replaces the image URLs in the email HTML with references to the inline images. If images cannot be retrieved, the system prompts for manual upload.

  • Images are Hosted in Mapp Engage (Online HTML): Images are uploaded to Mapp Engage servers and downloaded from there when the recipient opens the email.

Behavior and Scope

  • Tracking pixels are always hosted on Mapp Engage servers and are not affected by the selected image handling option.

  • Flash files (*.swf) are treated as images but cannot be inlined. These files are referenced using a formatted <object> block.

Default Email Editor

Setting

Description

Default Email Editor

Defines which editor opens by default when creating or editing an email message. Step 2. Compose Message opens using the selected editor.

Options:

  • HTML Code: Opens the code-based editor with syntax highlighting and line numbering.

  • Graphical Editor: Opens a visual editor that lets you edit messages without HTML knowledge.

Password Settings

Setting

Description

Automatically Generated Passwords

Defines how long automatically generated passwords are valid, including those created via the Forgot Password function or for API users. Validity ranges from 1 to 14 days. If left empty, these passwords never expire.

Manually Generated Passwords

Defines how long manually created passwords are valid, such as when a system user resets their password. Validity ranges from 30 to 180 days. If left empty, these passwords never expire.

Reminder Period

Defines how many days before expiration a reminder is sent to system users. One reminder is sent per day until the password expires. The reminder period can be set from 1 to 14 days before expiration. A reminder period is required if password validity is defined.

Behavior and Scope

  • Changes to password settings can affect existing system users.

  • If a password expires, system users can request a new password via the Forgot Password function or contact a system administrator.
