Overview
The Personalization Builder is the visual editor for personalization rules in Mapp Engage. You build InsertIf and InsertElse blocks with conditions and content, without writing code. The Builder generates the code of the rule. When you insert the rule into a message, this code is copied into the message.
Use the Builder when a placeholder is not enough, for example for conditions, fallback content, or several variants of a text.
Navigation Path
You can open the Builder in two ways:
From a message: In the Content step, click Personalisation and then New.
From the personalization overview: Go to Audience > Segmentation > Personalization and click Create. To change an existing rule, click Edit in its context menu.
The entry point determines how you can use the rule. See Using and Saving Rules below.
Key Characteristics
Visual rule building: You create conditions and content in the graphical interface. No coding is required.
Simple and complex logic: A rule can be a single
InsertIfblock or a structure withInsertElseblocks, nested blocks, and a default block. Two modes: In Edit Mode, you define the conditions of one block. In Structure Mode, you manage all blocks of the rule and their content.
Graphical and code view: You can switch to the code of the rule and edit it directly.
Testing: The preview validates the rule and shows the result for test contacts.
Configuration and Behavior
Edit Mode and Structure Mode
The Builder opens in Edit Mode with the first InsertIf block selected. In Edit Mode, you define the conditions of this block. You create each condition in the Condition Builder, a dialog that opens when you add a condition.
In Structure Mode, you see all blocks of the rule and manage their order, nesting, and content. A rule with one condition and no content can be completed in Edit Mode. As soon as you need content, InsertElse blocks, nested blocks, or a default block, switch to Structure Mode.
For all elements of both modes, see Personalization Builder: Create and Edit. For step-by-step instructions, see Create a Personalization Rule.
Code View
Click Code to see the code that the Builder generates. You can also enter or change the rule in the code. You can switch back to Graphical as long as the graphical interface can interpret the rule. Some expressions, for example functions, are only possible in the code. See Code View for Personalization Rules.
Block Names
You can give each block a name. The name becomes the ID of the block in the code and appears in the email message statistics. With descriptive names, you can compare the success of the variants after sendout.
Testing Rules
Click Preview to test the rule. The preview opens in a new window and validates the rule when it opens. Test a rule in two stages:
In the Builder preview, check the result for test contacts whose data matches each branch of the rule. See Personalization Builder: Preview.
After you insert the rule, preview the message with different contacts. See Message Preview (Email).
Using and Saving Rules
Use takes the rule into the message without saving it. This option is only available when you open the Builder from a message. You then insert the rule at the desired position, for example by right-clicking.
Save saves the rule to your library. You can then insert it into any message from the personalization expander. If you open the Builder from the personalization overview, you must save the rule before you can use it.
When you insert a rule, its code is copied into the message. Later changes to the saved rule do not change messages that already contain the rule. Changes in the message do not change the saved rule.
For the insert methods, see Insert Personalizations into HTML Emails and SMS Messages.
