This page explains how media metrics in Mapp Intelligence depend on player events and parameters.
It provides:
An overview of each metric with its required events and parameters.
A list of common pitfalls if events or parameters are missing or used incorrectly, and how this impacts the metrics.
A mapping of events to the metrics they influence, as a quick reference.
Metrics Overview
Note
A Media ID (name of the media session) is required for all metrics. In the table below, only additional key parameters that directly affect metric calculation are listed.
Event names and parameter keys may vary depending on the integration method (SmartPixel, SDKs, server-to-server, etc.).
Metric | Required Events | Key Parameters | Calculation / Dependencies |
|---|---|---|---|
init, play, pause, stop, seek, eof | totalTime, current | Calculated as Play Duration ÷ Media Views. | |
init, play, pause, stop, seek, eof | totalTime, current | Calculated as Run Time ÷ Media Views. | |
play, pause, seek, eof | totalTime, current | Run Time ÷ media length¹ × 100. | |
play, pause, seek, pos | totalTime, current | Video is split into 10% steps. Regular position events are required. | |
init (or first play) | totalTime | Media length¹ × number of views. Used mainly for custom formulas. | |
init (or first play) | – | Number of visitors with Media Views > 0. Independent of view duration. | |
init (or first play) | totalTime (recommended) | A view is only counted if initialization occurs before playback. | |
eof | totalTime, current (must match) | Counts views where the video was completed (end of file event). | |
play, pause, stop, seek, eof | totalTime, current | Duration is summed between play and pause/stop/end. Correct calculation requires seek when users skip. | |
play, pause, stop, seek, custom | Action type, current | Counts how often users performed a specific action. | |
play, pause, stop, seek, custom | Action type, current | Counts each action per media once per session. | |
init (or first play) | – | Counts the distinct media objects used. Multiple views of the same media are not counted repeatedly. | |
play, pause, stop, seek, eof | totalTime, current | Longest continuous play time of a view, without counting repeated sections. |
¹ “Media length” refers to the total duration of the file transmitted via parameter mt2 (Total Playing Time). It is sent with the first play action.
Pitfalls and Their Impact
Missing or incorrect events
No seek on skips → Skipped sections are incorrectly added to Play Duration and may falsely trigger chapter completions.
No eof event → Completes are not registered, last position is not saved.
No pos events → Chapters cannot be assigned correctly; last known position is missing.
Sending pos during pause/stop → Inflates Play Duration and distorts chapter analysis.
Missing or incorrect parameters
No totalTime set → Percentage-based metrics (Maximum Run Time %, Media Chapters) cannot be calculated.
Incorrect current values → Distorts all time-based metrics (Play Duration, Run Time, Chapters).
Technical limits
More than 500 requests per session → Additional requests are ignored.
Duplicate events within 3 seconds → Are not processed.
