Overview
A control address is a contact in Mapp Engage that receives copies of messages sent by your system, either for specific groups or for all messages. Copies are fully personalized using the contact’s profile values, and can be used for archiving or monitoring personalized variants across channels such as email and SMS.
Key Characteristics
You can assign a control address to specific groups or system-wide to receive a copy of every message your system sends.
Messages sent to a control address reflect the contact’s profile values, producing the same personalized content a matching recipient would see.
You can use any contact as a control address for email, SMS, or both.
If a sendout has no recipients, control addresses do not receive a copy. If there is at least one recipient, control addresses are added to the sendout.
You can create multiple control addresses to capture different personalized versions, for example, with and without a specific offer.
Deliveries to control addresses are excluded from message statistics.
Control addresses are never deactivated.
Limits and Behavior
A system user can designate only one contact as a control address at a time. For lists of control addresses, contact your customer representative.
Control addresses do not receive single messages.
You can have up to 2000 control addresses per system.
Control Addresses vs Test Recipients
Use control addresses to archive live sendouts and test recipients for quality checks before sending them out.
Control Address | Test Recipient |
|---|---|
Receives a message during the final sendout | Receives a preview before the final sendout |
Used to archive a copy of a personalized message | Used for quality check before sendout |
Can be set system-wide or for specific groups | Set only for specific groups |
Excluded from message statistics | Included in message statistics |
Example
You send a weekly newsletter. Subscribers with a recent purchase see an extra “special offer” paragraph. You create a contact with a dedicated archive inbox and set it as a control address with the profile value that triggers the offer. Each sendout includes a copy of the personalized “offer” version to this inbox. You can add a second control address without that profile value to archive the version without the offer.
